چکیده

Nuclear techniques for direct assessment of internally deposited radionuclides are essential for monitoring and dosimetry of members of the public exposed due to radiation accidents. Selection of the methods for detection of internal contamination is determined by nuclear-physical characteristics of the deposits. For the population living in settlements located along the Techa River contaminated in 1950s by liquid radioactive wastes from the plutonium production complex Mayak (Southern Urals, Russia) the main dose-forming radionuclide was Sr. It is a bone-seeking radionuclide that incorporates in the skeleton and remains there for many years so it can be detected for long periods after the intake occurred. Measurements of pure beta-emitting Sr are possible through detection of bremsstrahlung from the Sr/Y beta rays in the low energy range (30-160 keV) using phoswich detectors. This suggested the development of a unique whole body counter in 1974 for monitoring of the Srand Cs-body burden in the Techa River population with the use of phoswich detectors. Long-term observations with the WBC covering more than 38,000 measurements on over 20,000 people have been made. This has created a unique database for studying strontium and calcium metabolism and for assessment of the internal dose for residents of the Techa River settlements due to ingestion of Sr. This paper describes the main results obtained for the Techa River population essential for bone metabolism and dosimetry, epidemiological studies, and radiation protection.

Development of an Age- and Gender-specific Model for Strontium Metabolism in Humans

This paper presents a development of a new biokinetic model for strontium, which accounts for age and gender differences of metabolism in humans. This model was developed based on the long-term follow-up of the residents living on the banks of the Techa River (Southern Urals, Russia) contaminated with Sr in 1950-1956. The new model uses the structure of ICRP model for strontium but model parame...

Evaluation of In Utero Doses from Maternal Ingestion of Strontium Radioisotopes at the Techa River

A cohort of persons exposed in utero due to radioactive contamination of the Techa River (Southern Urals, Russia) in the early 1950s represents a unique opportunity for studying radiation risks from chronic exposures in early life. Bone-seeking strontium radioisotopes were the main contributors to haemopoietic tissue doses received in utero from maternal ingestion of radionuclides before and du...

Assessment Of Tooth Tissues Dose Rate Coefficients From Incorporated Strontium-90 In EPR Dose Reconstruction For The Techa Riverside Population

The method of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in the tooth tissues is used to reconstruct cumulative absorbed dose for the Techa River residents. The interpretation of EPR-measurements presents a difficult task due to a contribution of external and internal exposure. It is very important to assess the real contribution of Sr incorporated in tooth tissues to the total EPR dose. For this pu...

Reconstruction of the Internal Dose in Population from Radioactive Releases

INTRODUCTION The need for retrospective assessments of the internal doses received by members of the public as a result of large environmental releases of radionuclides arose in connection with the atmospheric nuclear weapons tests conducted in the 1950s and 1960s as well as with major radiation accidents. The assessment of the internal exposure is greatly facilitated when measurements of the r...

First attempts at validation of radiation exposure of the population along the Techa River, southern Urals.

A research programme sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety (BMU) was conducted during 1992 and 1993 in the Southern Urals, to provide an initial validation and comparison of results of population exposure arising from the release of radioactive waste from the MAYAK nuclear facility between the years 1948 and 1967. This programme inclu...
